Highway, Vandenberg Air Force Base, DOD. Ten miles northwest of Lompoc, CA. Chaparral. Minimal fire activity.
Firefighters are working to complete line around incident. Request for Type II team has been canceled as ground resources making good progress with the assistance of helicopters and air tankers. Threats / Values at risk to Lompoc Federal penitentiary, electrical transmission lines and Air force Village West have been reduced. There are 25 buildings on-base that have been evacuated, including all of the buildings along Utah St, Iceland Avenue and New Mexico St. All non essential military personnel have been asked to evacuate VAFB and stand by for orders. There are unconfirmed reports that the cause of the fire was due to a blown transformer. Highway 1 has re-opened Incident will require heavy mop up due to anticipated weather conditions in the next operational period.
Rough terrain, high winds, and the proximity to an active military base are major containment problems.
Many thanks to the Fire Information services for their updates.
