Current Status:

  • As of 6:00 pm last evening, the East Basin Complex is 100% contained.
  • The Basin Complex, started by lightning on June 21, burned 162,818 acres.
  • Mop-up, repair of dozer lines and backhaul of equipment will continue on the East Basin Complex, and fireline repair continues on the Indians Fire and the West Basin Complex.
  • Due to the active mop-up and fireline repair work on the East Basin Complex, motorists should continue to use extreme caution when traveling through the area.  
  • Expect many large trailers on the Carmel Valley Road tomorrow as they leave the incident.
  • The number of personnel assigned to the Complex has decreased to 562.
  • Suppression cost to date is estimated at $77.2 million.
  • California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 will turn over management of the Complex tomorrow to a team that will complete the mop-up and fireline rehabilitation.
  • Today there will be areas of low clouds in the morning, turning sunny in the afternoon.  Temperatures will be 73-83 degrees at higher elevations and 79-89 degrees at lower elevations near Arroyo Seco. Some areas of smoke will still be visible.
  • This will be the last Basin Complex Fire Update.
  • Team 3 Incident Commander Jeanne Pincha-Tulley would like to thank all of the communities in the Carmel Valley for their support during this Incident.

Status of Public Lands and Recreation Facilities:

  • All national forest lands in the Monterey Ranger District, including roads and trails, remain closed to public access except several picnic areas on the Big Sur coast along Highway 1 including Pfeiffer Beach, Mill Creek, Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove Beach, Willow Creek and San Carpoforo Beach. Camping overnight is prohibited at these sites as are wood campfires and charcoal barbecues.  Gas stoves are permitted.
  • Andrew Molera State Park is open for day use only at the main park entrance on the west side of Highway 1.  The Creamery Meadow, Bluff, Panoramic, Ridge, River trail system and Molera Beach west of Highway 1 are open.
  • Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is open for camping.  The Valley View Trail on the east side of Highway 1 and trails on the west side of Highway 1 are open, as well as the Big Sur Lodge, the campground and the swimming holes within the campground.   
  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park has reopened the small parking area and the Waterfall Trail from the parking area to the overlook.  All other park facilities east of Highway 1 will remain closed.
  • Limekiln State Park is open for day use and camping.  Call (831) 667-2403 for further information.
  • For information regarding all other State Parks in the area call Big Sur Station at (831) 667-2315.
  • The Santa Lucia Recreation Residence Tract in Los Padres National Forest is closed to public entry.  Permit holders may contact the King City office of the Monterey Ranger District at (831) 385-5434 for access information.
