Equality Action Now Reaction to the Loss in Maine for Same-Sex Marriage

By: Equality Action Now

Sacramento, CA November 4, 2009 – Today is the one-year anniversary of the repeal of Prop 8 that took away the civil rights of millions of citizens across California. Today the voters of the State of Maine took away their citizens' civil rights by repealing same-sex marriages in that state. The membership and leadership of Equality Action Now, a local volunteer grassroots civil rights organization based in Sacramento, CA is saddened by the news and stands with their brothers and sisters in Maine and indeed throughout the country vowing to "unswervingly continue the battle to win back the civil rights of LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transsexual, Questioning, Intersex) citizens here in the state of California by overturning Prop 8 in ether 2010 or 2012".

Tina Reynolds, co-founder of Equality Action Now, and her army of volunteers are preparing for this evening's "One Year Ago" rally and march at the state capitol to call attention to California's gay community and their own struggle to win back same-sex marriage rights. The leadership understands that the devastating loss in Maine will fuel opponents of same-sex marriage and give them a temporary psychological boost.

Opponents have been quite successful in using large contributions; much has come from large religious institutions such as the Mormon and Catholic Church to wage a Public Relations campaign based on misconception, unwarranted fear, and out-in-out lies. Supporters of same-sex marriages have made very good inroads by educating individuals who may have originally voted "yes" on 8 or was on the fence at the time but now have a better understanding of what, in truth, same-sex marriage would mean to the gay couples, and more importantly to them as heterosexual married couples, who long for the same rights afforded other citizens.

Equality Action NOW is moving ahead in their struggle today by leading their supporters in a "One Year Ago – A Day of Tears – A Day of Action" Rally and March at the California State Capitol Building beginning at 5:00 pm. This weekend they are sponsoring "Courage Camp", organized by the statewide civil rights organization, Courage Campaign, training the next generation of social and civil rights activists.

According to Reynolds, "The fight is not over until we win our civil rights back and we overturn Prop 8 here in California as well as other same-sex marriage initiatives across the United States. This evening we will stand on our own state capitol steps in solidarity with our brothers and sisters fighting for their civil rights everywhere. We join arms with them and continue to gain strength to fight both here at home and on a national level along with them!"
