Equality California Congratulates Kamala Harris on Her Victory for Attorney General

By: Equality California

San Francisco November 24, 2010 – Equality California endorsed candidate Kamala Harris has emerged victorious in a tightly contested race for attorney general. Her opponent Steve Cooley conceded today. In response, Equality California Executive Director Geoff Kors issued the following statement:

"We are thrilled that Kamala Harris will be our state's next attorney general and that Californians have elected both a governor and attorney general who have pledged to stand against Prop. 8, refusing to defend this discriminatory law in court. Brown and Harris' stance could significantly impact the outcome of the federal challenge of Prop. 8, as there likely is no party in the case with standing to appeal Judge Walker's decision deeming the measure unconstitutional.

"Harris has long championed full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians, and we are extremely fortunate to have a true friend in the attorney general's office working to make California a state where everyone is treated equally under the law."

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arument in Perry vs. Schwarzenegger on December 6th.

In addition to endorsing Harris, Equality California mobilized its more than 600,000 members and volunteers in support of her candidacy.

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights advocacy organization in California. Over the past decade, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for LGBT individuals to a state with some of the most comprehensive civil rights protections in the nation. Equality California has passed more than 70 pieces of legislation and continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.org
