“Project Save Our Surf is in full support of the Malibu World Surfing Reserve, and is joining Save The Waves to help preserve one of our most sacred habitats: cherished surf breaks,” said actress, surfer and PSOS founder Tanna Frederick. “Malibu is being designated not only for its world class surf, but for its diverse wildlife, coastal ecosystem and native land as well.” World Surfing Reserves protects world-class surf breaks and their surrounding areas by promoting the many positive environmental, cultural, and socio-economic benefits of these coastal surf zones. The program serves as an international model for environmental protection as well as creating a bond between World Surfing Reserves and the global surfing community. Malibu is the first surf break to be officially designated in what will be a global network of surfing reserves. On October 9th, the first World Surfing Reserve will be officially designated during an enshrinement ceremony at Surfrider Beach in Malibu. The California surf break has been recognized as one of the world's “perfect waves” but has been continuously and adversely affected by poor water quality due to sewage runoff from the city of Malibu and the greater Los Angeles area. The Malibu World Surfing Reserve aims to bring important community awareness around the issues of coastal preservation and surf break protection. “The designation of Malibu as a World Surfing Reserve provides a proactive model for crucial grassroots environmental partnership built around protecting our special coastal areas,” said Save The Waves Executive Director Dean LaTourrette. “We’re delighted to have Project Save Our Surf and their quickly-growing grassroots network join the World Surfing Reserves movement.” The Malibu World Surfing Reserve events on October 9th will include a morning paddle-out celebration and a midday dedication, followed by an evening fundraiser.
