Public Input Sought on Winchester Canyon Gun Club's Request for Permit

GOLETA, Calif. Dec. 4, 2009 - The Forest Service is seeking public comment on a proposal to reissue a special use permit to the Winchester Canyon Gun Club for its target range on West Camino Cielo Road in Los Padres National Forest. Forest Service officials are preparing to conduct an Environmental Impact Statement analysis of the proposed project located on the Santa Barbara Ranger District.

The Winchester Canyon Gun Club is a very popular target shooting facility. Its 700 members and the general public use the range for rifle, pistol and black powder target shooting, as well as trap, skeet, and sporting clay shooting. The gun club has held special use permits to use national forest lands since 1969.

The public is invited to provide comments and any concerns about this proposal to the Forest Service. In order for those comments to be considered as part of the draft Enivornmental Impact Statement, responses need to be received by the Forest prior to January 18, 2010.

To provide additional opportunity to comment on this project, a project open house will be held on December 9, 2009, from 5-7 pm at the Los Padres Supervisor's Office at 6755 Hollister Avenue, Suite 150, Goleta, CA 93117.
