Summary:

Night shift will be minimized from here on, so resources will be available for demobilization this afternoon, with CDF and County resources being high priority for release. Actions planned: Hold containment lines, remove hazardous snags 500 feet in from the fire lines, and mop-up 500 feet in.

Firefighters finally got the upper hand on the Hyampom Fire yesterday. With assistance from nine helicopters and four airtankers, crews held the firelines all day, even when winds picked up in the afternoon. Fire crews are working today to remove hazardous snags and mop-up all lines for 300 feet into the fire. Smoke cleared enough to allow for more accurate mapping; the fire covers about 1060 acres. The fire, which is located two miles northwest of Hayfork, CA, on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, is 100% contained.

A total of 1736 personnel are assigned to the fire, including 85 fire engines, 56 hand crews, 9 helicopters, 18 water tenders and 12 bulldozers. There are no evacuations or road closures, and life in Hayfork is returning to normal.

Numerous individuals and organizations in the community assisted with the fire suppression effort, including: the volunteer fire departments from Barker Valley, Hayfork Valley, Hyampom, Platina, and Post Mountain; Hayfork Neighborhood Watch; Animal Rescue; the staff of the Trinity County Fair; Hayfork Water District; Trinity County Sheriff's Office and the Sheriff's Posse; Trinity County Search and Rescue; the Hayfork Valley Ham Radio Operators; the Salvation Army; the Red Cross; Hayfork Community Church; County Supervisors Bob Reiss and Ralph Modine; Mountain Valley Unified School District; the California Highway Patrol; and the many local businesses that provided food, equipment and other resources.

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has implemented an area closure for the fire vicinity, to protect the public during the fire suppression effort. The closure covers approximately 21 square miles north of the Hyampom Road. For more specific information on the closure see the Forest web site at www.r5.fs.fed.us/shastatrinity or call the Hayfork Ranger Station at (530)628-5227. Maps and photographs of the fire are also posted on the Forest web site. Anyone with information about the fire start is requested to contact Secret Witness at (530)243-2319.
