WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 2009 - Kathleen M. Novak, president of the National League of Cities, mayor, Northglenn, Colo., released the following statement on the Inauguration of President Barack Obama:
"The National League of Cities (NLC) congratulates President Barack Obama on his historic inauguration. President Obama's personal history demonstrates his understanding of the critical contribution cities and towns make to our nation's prosperity. As a former community organizer, the President has worked to empower citizens to improve the nation beginning with their hometowns. He truly understands that real change starts with local action.
As the organization representing cities large and small, NLC looks forward to collaborating with President Obama to bring our country back to economic prosperity in a climate measured by government innovation, transparency and accountability.
More than ever, towns, cities and suburbs are tied together with commonalities and common purpose. Cities act as the economic and cultural backbone of regional economies. We are pleased that President Obama has a vision of the future that includes cities and towns as the central points of wider and diverse metropolitan and rural areas."
The National League of Cities is the nation's oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. www.nlc.org.
