Wayne Pacelle: FDA Applauded for Proposed Rule to Protect Safety of Pet Food and Treats

By: Humane Society of the United States

Oct. 25, 2013 - The Humane Society of the United States' CEO Wayne Pacelle is issuing the following statement in response to the Food and Drug Administration investigation into contaminated pet jerky treats and the proposed new rule to protect the safety of pet food and treats:

As the recent shock over the deaths of hundreds of pets who consumed imported jerky treats illustrates, there is an urgent need for stronger regulations protecting the safety of our pet food and treat supply. The Humane Society of the United States applauds the Food and Drug Administration for issuing a proposed rule to require better preventative measures for pet food safety. Pets reside in 68 percent of U.S. households and are cherished members of our families who deserve high-quality, safe, nutritious food and treats. We urge the FDA to continue investigating the cause of the pet food deaths, and encourage pet owners who suspect their pets may have consumed contaminated products to report their case to the FDA's consumer reporting system.
