2,241 Lightning Strikes in California, Many More in Nevada

NEVADA CITY, Calif. July 27, 2010 - The lightning map provided by the Tahoe National Forest shows 2,241 lightning strikes throughout California, with 1,356 hits in National Forests. Only 23 downstrikes reported for the Tahoe National Forest with no new fires ignited. For the state of Nevada however, the multitude of overlapping strikes is reminiscent of the June 2008 lightning storm.
Currently, six major fires are burning throughout California:
Bull 4,500 acres - 0% contained
Constantia Complex 1,700 acres - 50% contained
Potato 686 acres - 70% contained
Mono 500 acres - 5% contained
Russell 250 acres - 30% contained
Modoc 102 acres - 5% contained
In Nevada, the Rock Creek fire is at 6,000 acres.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected again today.
