4th Annual Nevada City Farmers Market and Community Celebration This Saturday

By: Mali Dyck, Market Manager, Nevada City Farmers Market

Nevada City – Summer has finally arrived to mark the opening weekend for the Nevada City Farmers Market in Downtown Nevada City, this Saturday 8:30-12:30.  This year, the market has grown again with more farmers, more food, and more fun activities.  The market will extend 2 weeks longer this year, closing November 12th.

New Vendors
“It’s so exciting to welcome Ike’s Quarter Café as a new vendor selling breakfast and lunch fare as well as their new line of salad dressings, spice rubs and other take-home items.” reports Market Manager, Mali Dyck.  Other new vendors include: Soul Kitchen Creperie, Dawn Lorraine Skin Care, Delightful Gardens, Fowler Family Farm, Lettuce Love Farm, Sierra Botanica, Sweet Mountain Momma’s, and Veri Tea.  So many new vendors means the market will extend from Union Street into the alley between Bank of America and Callanan Park.

Spring Veg
This cool spring weather means our Nevada County farms are off to a slow start, so come early for the best selection.  The first few weeks you’ll find mouthwatering strawberries, lettuce mixes, herbs, salad turnips, radishes, onions, garlic, broccoli, and cabbage, along with chicken, pork, eggs, honey and more.

Music, Art, Community
As in years past, the market will feature 3 local musical acts each market, as well as local artisans and community benefit organizations.  Sierra of Cheek Thrills Face Painting will will decorate kids’ skin with sparkly creatures, while educational demos for adults will feature seasonal foods, wild plants and wine pairings.  Two seating areas will welcome market goers to relax, catch up with friends and enjoy the music.

Health and Wellness
If you’re an early bird, and arrive at the market’s opening bell at 8:30am, you can join Core Movement Center instructors for a 25 minute chi gong class in Robinson Plaza, before the musician start playing at 9am.  Stop by the Sierra Botanica Booth to learn about HALLo, a new health alternative organization providing medicinal herbs and information.

EBT and WIC accepted
The NC Farmers Market is the first and only Nevada County growers market to welcome EBT cardholders to purchase fresh, local food.  Come to the Market Information booth to learn about this important new program!

The Nevada City Farmers Market is hosted by the Nevada City Farmers Market Association (NCFMA).  The market is open 22 weeks, from June 18th until November 12th, 2011.  Market hours are 8:30am – 12:30pm.  For more information including a map and directions to the market, see NCFarmersMarket.org or find us on Facebook.
