Angora Restoration Public Meeting Set: May 22

By: USDA Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. May 6, 2008 -- The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) invites the community to help plan the future of the Angora Fire area. The LTBMU will host an open house on Thursday, May 22, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the board room at the Lake Tahoe Community College, One College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Forest Supervisor Terri Marceron will begin the meeting with an overview of the types of questions the LTBMU is asking the community to help answer. After these initial remarks, resource specialists will be available at stations around the room to explain possible activities, answer questions and accept public input. This is not a public hearing, so attendees may arrive and depart at any time during the meeting.

The May 22 meeting will kick off a 30-day period through June 23, 2008, during which the Forest Service invites the public to review possible activities and take advantage of this first opportunity to help plan the future of the Angora Fire area.

"We want to hear from the community how they want the area affected by the Angora Fire to look in the next 10 to 50 years," said Cheva Heck, LTBMU public affairs officer. "We will be looking at options for replanting, reducing fuels, reconstructing stream channels, restoring meadow and streambank vegetation and providing access for recreation through our roads and trails."

The LTBMU will post restoration planning information on its website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu and make it available at the front desk at the Forest Supervisor's Office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. 96150.

Additional opportunities to comment on Angora restoration will occur as the Forest Service begins the National Environmental Policy Act process for this project.
