Animal Defenders International to reveal elephant abuse at Grass Valley public meeting

By: Animal Defenders International (ADI)

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. June 28, 2013 – Animal Defenders International (ADI) will show Grass Valley citizens examples of the abuse of elephants at Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT) premises in Perris, CA and answer any questions about the footage, next Monday, July 1st.

The meeting has been called by a coalition of animal groups including ADI, and local lead group, the Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE), says that close to 100 people have already signed up to attend the event at the Holbrooke Hotel. The meeting will discuss the Nevada Fair Board's decision to continue with elephant rides at this year's Fair, despite compelling testimony from several animal advocate groups and concerned members of the public at the Fair Board's meeting on June 20, 2013.

Matt Rossell, ADI Campaigns Director, "It is vital that the public sees the behind-the-scenes training so that they are informed before they pay to ride these elephants. Although for practical reasons we put just a few minutes online, we invite all Board Members to meet with us and see all of the footage and we are happy to answer questions."

ADI's undercover investigation of HTWT, taken over an eight week period, resulted in nearly 10 hours of footage and shows elephants being repeatedly beaten and electric shocked with stun guns during routine handling and training. Nine minutes of footage has been made available online, providing an overview of the key acts of violence, including 168 hooks, hits, jabs and electric shocks: http://bit.ly/ADI-HTWTInvestigation.

Shelley Frost, Program Manager, Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE), "After listening to testimony from dozens of concerned local citizens, parents and children, the fair board chose to dismiss the option of cancelling the contract without even a discussion. If the board thinks that a bang of the gavel put an end to this debate, they couldn't be more wrong. Nevada County residents have made it clear we do not want Have Trunk Will Travel bringing their abused elephants to our fair."
