Electricity Fair Re-energizes Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park

By: California State Parks

August 1, 2012 - The Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park Visitor Center will open its doors to the public on Saturday, September 8, 2012, highlighting one of the world's oldest hydroelectric facilities. The public is encouraged to join the Electricity Fair – an interactive family celebration intended to re-energize the Powerhouse.

The Electricity Fair will feature children activities, docents welcoming the public to the new exhibits and displays within the visitor center, along with special tours of the historic Powerhouse.

"The opening of the Folsom Powerhouse Visitor Center has been a long time coming, but we are very proud of the results, showcasing one of California's historic gems," State Park Superintendent Richard Preston said. "The new exhibits in the Visitor Center will provide an overview of the historic site, interactive exhibits that explain electricity and magnetism science, California water use, and California's energy future."

On the morning of July 13, 1895, the Folsom Powerhouse sent electricity to Sacramento and changed the history of California. This major event was celebrated on September 9, 1895, "California Admission Day" with a Grand Electric Carnival. People from all over attended the event to witness the brilliantly lighted streets, the State Capitol outlined with glowing lights and electric trolley cars pulling floats with lights displayed in various arrangements all powered by the electricity being sent from Folsom Powerhouse.

Admission to the park and the event are free. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Visitors should park at the city of Folsom lots on Scott Street.

The Electricity Fair is presented in partnership with California State Parks, Friends of the Folsom Powerhouse, and Friends of Lakes Folsom and Natoma (FOLFAN).
