Before heading out to Yosemite or other outdoor retreats this vacation season, beginning photographers may want to check out an upcoming lecture at Sacramento State by renowned nature photographer Lewis Kemper.

Kemper, whose work has been used by organizations such as the Sierra Club and National Geographic Society, will share his techniques for creating dynamic nature images at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, in Room 301 of Sequoia Hall.

Titled "Light and Composition," Kemper's free lecture will focus on how photographers can improve their images and how he uses color to create moods and impacts in his own photographs. The evening will conclude with a slide show of the waterfalls, landscapes and icebergs Kemper photographed during a recent trip to Iceland.

Reservations are not required but seating is limited to about 120 people.

Kemper has photographed the natural beauty of North America for almost three decades, visiting 47 states along the way. He is part of the "Explorers of Light" group sponsored by Canon USA, Inc. These professionals serve as mentors sharing their knowledge, inspiration and expertise with amateur photographers as photography makes the transition from film to digital imaging.

"We are excited about this wonderful opportunity to have an internationally acclaimed photographer speaking at Sacramento State," says photography instructor Jennifer Wu, from the Department of Design. "Canon chose the top 78 professional photographers in the world to be a part of this group."

Kemper is the author of "The Yosemite Photographer's Handbook" and "The Yellowstone Photographer's Handbook." He also was the photographer for "Ancient Ancestors of the Southwest," published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co., and is a contributing editor to Outdoor Photographer and PC Photo magazines. His lecture is co-sponsored by Canon and Sacramento State.
