REDDING, Calif. (October 3, 2008) - Shasta-Trinity National Forest officials announced a closure of Forest Service System lands encompassing an area in the Yolla Bolly Middle Eel Wilderness. The closure is effective September 30, 2008 through May 16, 2009 and includes all National Forest System trails within the area.
The Yolla Bolly Complex fires spread over a large area, burning over 6,050 acres. This area is being closed for public safety because hazard reduction activities are occurring in this area. There are numerous safety concerns resulting from timber, hanging snags and damage to trails.
"This closure is intended to provide for public safety by lessening the potential for the public to become injured within the fire rehabilitation perimeter while recreating in the area," said Forest Supervisor Sharon Heywood.
The closure boundary of the Yolla Bolly Middle Eel Wilderness begins at Tomhead Saddle, then continues northwest to Black Rock Mountain, then south to West Low Gap, then continues south along Powell Ridge to Bear Wallow Camp, then east to Devil's Hole Ridge, then continues to The Knob, then continues east along Buck Creek to the forest boundary, then continues northwest along the forest boundary to the starting point, as shown on the attached map (2.3 Mb).
For the current closure information and maps please call the South Fork Management Unit (530) 628-5227 or visit the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Web site at
