August 12, 2011 - Allison Shaver on Auburn Road in Grass Valley spotted this female gray fox out her window with this plastic mayonnaise jar stuck on its head. She recruited Dad Richard and Mom Corey to keep the animal "corralled" while they called for help to Wildlife Rehabilitation & Release Answering Service at (530) 432-5522.
The call was forwarded to Small Mammal rehabber, Jan Crowell, who in turn called Mark Roberts and Kelly Guthrie. Mark and Kelly raced to the Shaver's home. Kelly was able to capture the fox in a net. They then brought the fox into the garage to keep it from running off while Richard Shaver was able to use snips to cut the jar off the foxes head.
After a quick physical check and removal of ticks, Kelly and Mark released the fox and it went on its merry way.
Good Job by all. This fox would obviously died from dehydration and starvation had it not been aided.
Please keep our wildlife safe by recycling and disposing properly of garbage.
