GVPD Begins Prescription Drug Collections

GRASS VALLEY, CA July 13, 2009 - The Grass Valley Police Department today announces the start of a full-time prescription drug collection targeted at reducing risk to the community.

In collaboration with the Coalition for a Drug-Free Nevada County and Nevada County Recycles, the Grass Valley Police Department has installed a receptacle designed to collect unused prescription medications from residents of Grass Valley. This program, piloted in the fall of 2008, successfully resulted in the receipt of over 260 pounds of unused and expired pharmaceuticals that may have otherwise ended up in the garbage, down the drains or into the wrong hands.

With a focus on reducing prescription drug abuse and minimizing the effects of improper disposal on the environment, a steel collection bin has been conveniently placed in the lobby of the Grass Valley Police Department and will be available 24 hours a day for the drop off of either unused or expired pharmaceuticals (prescription medications) in solid form. The receptacle is not designed to receive liquid medications or sharps. Citizens wishing to utilize this free service will need to follow these few simple steps to ensure everyone's safety.

Medications should be dropped off in original containers (i.e.; prescription bottle, foil-wrapped packaging, etc.)

All confidential information should be removed leaving only the name of the medication.

Containers should not be larger than 5 inches in height and not more than 3 inches in diameter.

The Coalition for a Drug-Free Nevada County, Nevada County Recycles and the Grass Valley Police Department look forward to working with you to reduce prescription drug abuse and protect the environment.
