KVMR Presents Democracy NOW! Host Amy Goodman - April 17

Mar. 31, 2009 - Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman returns to Grass Valley, along with her brother, investigative journalist David Goodman, Friday, April 17 at the Grass Valley Veteran's Hall in a fundraising benefit for KVMR Community Radio. "We're looking forward to returning to Grass Valley" says Amy. "We so appreciate the warm reception from people who are involved, engaged, and enthusiastic about making positive change in their community."

Amy and David Goodman provide a timely and even revolutionary look at who wields the greatest power in America-ordinary citizens who take a chance and stand up for what they believe in. The Goodman's hope that the examples they share in their talk and in their book Standing Up to the Madness (now available in paperback) will inspire ordinary people to become active in preserving their country's values. As they explain in their introduction, "great change begins with small steps taken at home."

This year marks a new era in United States government and the 13th anniversary of Democracy Now! Now more than ever, we need a media that covers these movements, that doesn't ignore, or worse, mock or stigmatize such civic engagement. As is evident with the myriad bailouts and their attendant excesses, and President Obama's attenuated withdrawal plans from Iraq, along with his pledge to escalate the war in Afghanistan, the importance of independent media and strong, independent grassroots movements are essential.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Amy Goodman is an internationally acclaimed journalist and host of the daily grassroots global news hour Democracy Now!, which airs on more than 700 radio and TV stations around the world and on www.democracynow.org. Democracy Now! is the largest media collaboration in North American public broadcasting. Amy has won many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the George Polk Award, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting.

David Goodman is an award-winning independent journalist, the author of seven books, and a contributing writer to Mother Jones. His articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Outside, The Nation, and numerous other publications. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book Fault Lines: Journeys into the New South Africa. He lives with his wife and two children in Vermont.
