Jan. 13, 2009 - Effective February 16, 2009, the McCourtney Road Transfer Station will close to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays of each week. The transfer station will be open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The Department of Sanitation is making every effort to keep operating costs at a minimum and rates flat. Closing two days per week will save the County an estimated $75,000 for the rest of this Fiscal Year, which ends June 30, 2009. The total annual savings of closing the station two days per week is estimated to be $200,000.

Department staff tracks visitors to the station on a daily basis, and over the last few months there has been a decline in traffic of nearly 20 percent, which coincides with a reduction in tonnage of nearly 15 percent. However, if traffic increases in the future, the Department will analyze the need to reopen to the public six or seven days a week.

Residents with questions can call the Department of Sanitation at 265-1411, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Department of Sanitation is committed to providing residents of Nevada County with premium waste service at reasonable costs.

The transfer stations located in the communities of North San Juan and Washington will not be affected by the two day per week closure of the McCourtney Road Transfer Station. They will continue to operate as in the past.
