MERCED Feb. 23, 2009 - Merced County Animal Control responded today to recent unsubstantiated and false rumors circulating on the web about the planned move to the County's new animal control facility. In mid-March the County will be moving its animal control services from its current location on Grogan Avenue to a new facility on the Castle Commerce Center. During this move the County will temporarily be operating two shelters to adopt and rescue out as many animals as possible from the Grogan Avenue shelter prior to moving all remaining adoptable animals over to the new shelter. During this intervening period, Animal Control Services will only be accepting animals at the new facility to reduce the number of animals that have to be transported.
"There is absolutely no truth to the rumors that the County shelter will be euthanizing animals to avoid transporting them to the new County facility," commented Dave Robinson, Merced County Agricultural Commissioner. "Our goal is always to adopt or rescue out as many animals as possible to good families in search of a pet. At our new facility, we will have an even friendlier adoption area that will allow families to meet and play with prospective animals prior to adopting them. We hope that with the improved location and surroundings that we will be able to increase the number of animals that are adopted from our facility."
Merced County is building a new animal control facility, replacing its current facility on Grogan Avenue in Merced. This new state of the art 22,747 sq. ft. shelter was designed by George Miers and Associates. J.L. Bray and Son is the contractor for the project. This facility is scheduled to open in mid-March. The new shelter will provide a more hospitable environment for the public to meet and interact with pets that they are looking to adopt. The new County Animal Control facility is located at 2150 Shuttle Drive in Atwater, on the Castle Commerce Center of Santa Fe Avenue. If you have questions about animal control services, please contact Merced County Animal Control at (209) 385-7436.
