NID Hosts May 13 Workshop on Invasive Mussels

GRASS VALLEY May 8, 2008 - To foster public awareness and prevention, the Nevada Irrigation District will host a May 13 public workshop and expert presentation on Quagga and zebra mussels.

The very invasive mussels, native to Russia, have been found in California for the first time this year and are now reported to be in 17 state reservoirs. None have been found in the Sierra foothills but area water suppliers and fish and game authorities are concerned that the tiny mussels could be transported to the area on recreational boats and trailers.

Officials say these "aquatic hitchhikers" can cause devastating impacts on water systems, recreation, business and fisheries. NID is already taking steps to prevent the spread of mussels in this area.

The NID workshop will feature a presentation by California Department of Fish & Game environmental scientist Jason Roberts, who specializes in invasive species. A question and answer session will follow.

The workshop is open to the public and will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, in the Board of Directors meeting room at the NID Business Center, 1036 West Main Street, in Grass Valley.
