December 13, 2013 - The City Council of Nevada City on Thursday, December 12, adopted the Nevada City Annex to the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan for Nevada County. The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires that local jurisdictions to maintain federal disaster mitigation grant eligibility, have a FEMA approved Local Hazard Mitigation Plan.
A Hazard Mitigation Plan includes mitigation strategies that provides a blueprint for reducing potential losses based on an assessment of the jurisdiction's hazard risks and vulnerabilities.
The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services initiated the planning process to ensure Nevada City maintains eligibility for current funded mitigation grants as well as for future mitigation grant opportunities. In collaboration with representatives from the Nevada City Government, Fire Department, Police Department, and the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, the Annex was published and submitted to the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services for review and to FEMA for approval. FEMA approval (pending Nevada City adoption) was received on November 4, 2013.
