Nevada City June9, 2008 - On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court determined that current statutes limiting the designation of marriage to a union "between a man and a woman" is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute, and that the remaining statutory language must be understood as making the designation of marriage available both to opposite-sex and same-sex couples.
Consistent with the California Supreme Court's June 4th order that its decision on same-sex marriage will be final at 5 p.m. June 16, 2008, the California Department of Public Health's Office of Vital Records has directed county clerks to begin using the new state marriage license forms at that time. Therefore, the Nevada County Clerk-Recorder's Office will begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, June 17, 2008.
In order to expedite a possible large number of requests for marriage ceremonies in our office, the Clerk-Recorder's Office has implemented an optional appointment service. Appointments may be made using a new online form or by calling the office at 530-265-1221. This service is available for any couple wishing to be married in our office. A link to the form, and other important information for marrying couples, is available at the Marriage Licenses and Ceremonies page of our Website.
