Grass Valley, Calif. July 16, 2013 - On the eve of today's Fair Board meeting, an email was sent to select vendors and supporters of the Nevada County Fair. YubaNet, although a sponsor of the Fair, did not receive the email - we obtained a copy from a vendor.

The meeting of the Board of Directors will take place at 4:00 pm in the Ponderosa Hall at the Fairgrounds. The meeting is open to the public. The agenda for the meeting is posted here.

The email has caused consternation among people opposed to the elephant rides. At the last board meeting, directors did not respond to any of the concerns voiced by opponents and decided to let the contract with Have Trunk, Will Travel stand.

The full email is below:

Subject: Board of Directors Meeting - July 16 - Animal Rights Activists

To Nevada County Fair Supporters

As many of you are aware, there will be a Nevada County Fair Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, July 16, at 4 pm at Ponderosa Hall. The first item on the agenda is the discussion about the Have Trunk Will Travel contract to have elephants at the Nevada County Fair. We realize there has been controversy over the discussion, and we’ve sent a letter to the media (and it is available at the Fair Office) that outlines the reasons the Board made the decision they made.

We are writing you to first inform you of the situation, and secondly to invite you to please join us at the meeting in support of having the elephants at the Fair. The animal rights activists have gauged an active campaign encouraging those to attend who don’t support the elephants at the Fair, and we feel that it is important to have representation on the other side as well. Many, many community members have thanked us and shown support of having elephants at the Fair, and we are encouraging those in support to be as active as those in opposition. This is purely optional – feel free to join us if you feel the need to support. We appreciate that you may choose not to attend the meeting, and that’s fine as well. If you are able to attend, please wear light blue or denim to show your support.

Thank you for your consideration!
