January 12, 2012 - A new year can give us a sense of starting over, a renewed sense of our potential for a healthier way of living. If this time of year has inspired you to consider adding more physical activity to your life, the Nevada County Public Health Department has developed a physical activity resource guide that can set you on the course for improved health.

This effort is part of Action Communities for Health, Innovation and Environmental Change (or ACHIEVE), led by the Nevada County Public Health Department in collaboration with multiple community organizations and institutions to prevent chronic disease. The program's mission is to engage all sectors of the community in actions that increase access to physical activity, healthy foods, and tobacco-free environments.

Therefore, start your New Year off right by engaging in physical activity. In doing so, the Nevada County Public Health Department physical activity guide can direct you to healthier lifestyle choices. Based on the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the Centers for Disease Control, 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate exercise or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous exercise each week is recommended to reduce health risks in adults.

Nevada County's Physical Activity Resource Guide offers links to the many physical activity opportunities available within the County. The guide has been designed to provide residents and visitors with a quick reference to locate specific activities of interest. For example, after selecting the physical activity option from the Live Healthy Nevada County website, you will be directed to a list of various physical activities. From there, choose an activity, and you will immediately be directed to Google, which provides a list of venues for the activity selected. In addition, Google will offer accompanying maps and links to websites for particular physical activities.

Remember, to access Nevada County's Physical Activity Guide, log on to www.livehealthynevadacounty.com and click on Physical Activity to search for your desired activity.

If there are any physical activities you do not find on the guide and feel they should be added to our links, please send your suggestions to nevcoactivityguide@gmail.com. If you would like more information on ACHIEVE, contact Lori Burkart Frank at lorilifecoach@sbcglobal.net.
