November 3, 2010 4:10 p.m. The total number of ballots cast is now as follows:
29,911 ballots counted on election night
16,610 ballots remaining to be counted
Total: 46,521
This brings the turnout for Nevada County to 75.66%. The statewide turnout currently stands at 44%, but this does not include ballots remaining to be counted. Nevada County traditionally has a higher turnout than the statewide average.
With approximately 35% of the ballots remaining to be counted, election results for countywide contests, such as the Treasurer/Tax-Collector, are still a guessing game.
Currently, Tina Vernon leads her opponent Dai Meagher by 780 votes, with 12,335 votes for Vernon and 11,555 for Meagher.
November 3, 2010 3:55 p.m. The Nevada County Elections Office just released the approximate number of ballots remaining to be counted:
Vote-by-Mail ballots: 14,568
Provisional ballots: 1,256
Damaged ballots: 786
Total: 16,610 ballots
The Vote-by-Mail (VBM) ballots dropped off at polling stations, the Elections Office and received through US Mail before 8 pm represent the biggest chunk of the remaining ballots.
These procrastinators now will have to wait, with the rest of the public, for the final results of this election.
Secretary of State Debra Bowen explains the canvass process as follows: "Because of the need to confirm each voter's registration status, verify voter signatures, ensure people are not voting more than once, and more, not all ballots are counted on Election Day. County elections officials must report their final results to the Secretary of State 31 days after Election Day, which for this election is December 3. The Secretary of State then has seven additional days to certify the results of the election, which for this election is December 10."
November 3, 2010 2:10 a.m. At about 2 am on Wednesday morning the final update for election night reports was released by the Nevada County Elections Office. Out of 61,481 registered voters, 29,911 ballots were counted. This includes 11,481 ballots cast at the polling places and absentee ballots received before election day.
A large number of ballots remains to be counted as voters waited until the last day to drop off their vote-by-mail ballots. No official count is available at this hour, but YubaNet estimates the number of ballots that remain to be counted at over 10,000. An official estimate will be released by the Elections Office on Wednesday afternoon.
