August 3, 2013 - North San Juan Fire Department responded together with Consolidated Fire Department to a fall victim about a mile up the South Yuba trail towards Hoyt's Crossing.
The patient was located on the trail with minor injuries and was hiked out on a wheeled rescue basket to the ambulance at the Old 49er bridge.
The trail is narrow and step and a common place where hikers trip and sprain their ankles.
Often firefighters will use CHP rescue helicopters to airlift patients out of the river canyon in order to minimize the risk to the patient and the firefighters on the narrow and step trail. This time, the rescue helicopter was busy elsewhere.
