May 11, 2013 – The Peace Center of Nevada County presents the film, "Rise of the Drones", on Sunday, May 12th.
U.S. law enforcement is expanding its use of domestic drones for surveillance at an astounding rate. Congress has ordered the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to change airspace rules and make it much easier for police nationwide to use domestic drones, but the law does not include badly needed privacy protections.
Routine aerial surveillance would profoundly change the character of public life in America and here in Nevada County, exposing citizens to invasions of privacy in and around our homes. Drone manufacturers are also considering offering police the option of arming these remote-controlled aircraft with weapons like rubber bullets, Tasers, and tear gas.
From cameras that can capture every detail of an entire city at a glance, to swarming robots that can make decisions on their own, drones are changing our relationship to war, surveillance and each other.
There will be materials available for starting a Nevada County initiative process.
Come enjoy the film, and stay for the lively discussion to follow.
Popcorn & refreshments provided.
