May 9, 2009 - The 7-member House of Floyd tribute band will make its Grass Valley debut at The Center for the Arts May 9, and expect all the fanfare -- complete with light shows and video -- that used to occur at a Pink Floyd concert. You may even glimpse a helium-filled pink pig* hovering above The Center's stage.

Sheri Showalter, a vocalist with the band, shares the stage with her husband of more than 2 decades, Mark, who co-founded House of Floyd in 2005.

She says singing the songs of Pink Floyd is an honor.

"The music is very complicated and challenging... the lyrics are about life, love, and death and they seem to touch people on an emotional level," Showalter said.

The concert will include most of the music from "Dark Side of the Moon," because audiences always request those notable songs. Showalter says they also "go a bit deeper" and will play some early songs as well.

She describes the show as a whole as something that "envelopes the audience the way it was intended to be" when Pink Floyd performed live.

The musicians in House of Floyd are scattered around the Bay Area and have a schedule that puts them on the road 2-to-3 weekends a month. They have day jobs and children, and Showalter's day job is director of human resources for the law school at UC Berkeley. The children of the band members get into the act by selling merchandise at the band's gigs for a percentage of the profit. You may also see the kids as extras when House of Floyd plays "Another Brick in the Wall."

While there will be T-shirts and other things for sale at the concert, don't expect to see any House of Floyd CD's. "We want people to buy Pink Floyd CD's," Showalter said.

The May 9 show replaces one originally scheduled February 14 that had to be cancelled due to heavy snow in Nevada County. No refunds for that show will be accepted after May 9. Tickets are $18 in advance at The Center's Box Office and $20 at the door. The show starts at 8 p.m.

* The original pink pig was designed by Roger Waters in December of 1976 for the cover of the "Animals" album. It was filed with helium and measured 40 feet across. The band hired a marksman to shoot the pig down if it became untethered, but the first day the pig was never launched. The second day the marksman forgot to come and high winds caused the pig to break loose of its tethers and float high into the sky, interfering with air traffic at the time. The pig changed over time and was colored black during Pink Floyd's "The Wall" concerts.
