February 7, 2012 - This afternoon, detectives from the Placer County Sheriff's Office arrested the man who stole and destroyed the Ophir state historical marker. The marker was also recovered, but it was cut into many pieces and all of the writing was ground from the solid brass piece.
The California Registered Historical Landmark plaque was first reported stolen to the Sheriff's Office in January. It was located at Lozanos Road and Bald Hill Road. The plaque is valued at $951, detectives said.
Anthony James Karas, 47, was taken into custody at his Lincoln home and booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of grand theft and possession of stolen property. Last week, deputies found the sawed-up marker dumped along Fiddyment Road and were able to trace it back to Karas.
