Saturday, September 06, 2008 - Pan for gold, dig up the past, and meet Smokey Bear! All of this and more can be enjoyed at the 5th annual Plumas National Forest Fall Fest on Saturday, October 4, 2008, from 11:00am - 4:00pm. The event will be held at the Mt Hough Ranger Station, 39696 Hwy 70, three miles west of Quincy.
The continuing theme for this year's festival is "More Kids in the Woods," and features hands-on demonstrations to foster children's creativity in, as well as their appreciation for the outdoors. Children will learn basic compass skills while trying to locate a hidden treasure and discover "digging up the past" when they search for "artifacts" in the sand. Watershed exploration and crafts offer additional enjoyment for all ages.
A short nature hike will be offered by Plumas NF Botanist, Jim Belsher-Howe and will focus on local trees and plants. Mountain Men from the past will give a demonstration of their lives in the woods and how they survived while trapping and hunting.
Timothy Smith, local basket-maker and artist, will demonstrate basket-making. Other partners include Feather River College, PG&E, Women's Mountain Passages and many more.
Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings will be available for purchase from the Indian Valley Fire & Rescue.
