October 4, 2013 - Behind the ideas and efforts toward building a better world, volunteers fuel a movement of compassion and connection. You can make a difference by volunteering right here in your community. By sharing your time and talents to help others, you can help bring a sense of hope to our hearts, homes, neighborhoods, and ultimately our nation.
Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County non-profits, public agencies, and schools. For persons 55 and over, accident, liability, and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available. Putting Wheels in Motion: Bicycle Recycle Project
The Bicycle Recycle Project at Seven Hills School in Nevada City provides students hands-on learning of basic bicycle mechanical skills, reinforces the value of recycling, and provides the satisfaction of helping others. Volunteer assistants are needed to work with middle school students as they learn, practice and perform bicycle maintenance and rebuilding skills. Interest in bicycles as well as some maintenance experience is a plus, but a mechanical aptitude will suffice. Other opportunities (paperwork, grants, sorting, stocking, etc.) also exist.
Diaper Duty (but no doodie)
Nevada County Diaper Project is seeking volunteers to serve as diaper packagers 1-2 days per month. This opportunity consists of breaking down boxes of larger packages of diapers into stacks of 12 and wrapping, marking, and labeling them. This can be done in your home at your convenience. Diapers can be picked up or delivered to you if necessary. Volunteers in Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood would be ideal, and all materials are provided for you.
Volunteer from Home Creating Handcrafted Blankets
Knit, crochet or quilt blankets for new moms and their babies leaving the hospital. This is a project for Child Advocate's "Welcome Baby program" at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Service groups, clubs or individuals willing to help, please contact RSVP for more information and drop off locations.
Math & Reading Tutors
A Grass Valley school with a reputation for excellence is looking for 8-10 volunteers to tutor students in grades K-8th grade in math and reading. Days and times are flexible and tutoring sessions can be 45-90 minutes. Helping our young people succeed academically is a wonderful use of your volunteer time. Please consider this opportunity. Baby Cuddlers Needed
Volunteer once a week for a 3 hour shift at a local clinic in the Child Development Center assisting staff with feeding, rocking, reading and singing to infants and toddlers. Monday-Friday, 9-12pm and Tues/Thurs 3-6. Skills required: Be able to carry infants and toddlers, be patient and calm and be willing to work as a team member. Requirements: TB Test; Agency will background check.
A Vibrant Community is Well Informed & Involved
KVMR builds community by bringing people together to celebrate the music of the world and give voice to the community. Volunteers are needed to assist with front desk reception. If you have clerical skills and enjoy talking with listeners and supporters and have a few hours of free time during the week, please call RSVP.
North Star Mining Museum
This Grass Valley museum is a real hidden treasure with numerous hands-on exhibits and an extensive collection of Pelton Water Wheels. Docents are needed to guide visitors through the museum and give and informational talk on its content. This is a great group of dedicated volunteers that help others learn of our rich history and cultural heritage in Nevada County. Come be a part of it! Training and support is provided. Assistance in the gift shop is also needed.
Health and Wellness Volunteers
Are you interested in innovative approaches to health? Do you believe exercise is an important factor in staying healthy and safe? The "Stay Well At Home" program is looking for 10 facilitators willing to assist in this innovative four to six month program in association with the Falls Prevention Coalition. Get involved by helping seniors improve their overall health by lowering their risk for falls through exercise and other risk reduction strategies. Learn more by calling RSVP at 271-0255
Office Assistant at County Office
A County office in Nevada City is looking for a volunteer with clerical skills to assist with customer service including updating computer data, printing and mailing correspondence, and phones. Shifts can be 8-12 or 1-5pm Mon-Friday.
Cat Cuddlers & Dog Walkers
Sammie's Friends needs your help! At the Nevada County Animal Shelter, there are volunteer shifts every day of the week for both dog walking and cat care. It's a rewarding experience. The human contact can mean so much for the shelter animals while they are waiting for forever homes. This is a flexible position with shifts of 1.5-2 hours.
Friendly Visitor Volunteers
As a volunteer with the Friendly Visitor program you can make a profound and personal difference in the life of a senior or person with a disability. You need no special expertise; you will be asked to make a weekly visit of one or two hours; you will receive ongoing training and guidance; mileage is reimbursed; consideration is given to matching you with a person of similar interests.
