River Captains Alanna McDermott, Terra Nyssa and Terra Gleeson enjoying a site visit to Edwards Crossing
NEVADA CITY, Calif. June 21, 2013 - The 2013 River Ambassador program is ready to hit the river running with four River Captains and 28 trained volunteer River Ambassadors. SYRCL is excited to introduce returning River Captain: Terra Nyssa, and new River Captains: Terra Gleeson, Alanna McDermott, and Ali Stefancich to the SYRCL River Ambassador team.
Each of these wonderful River Captains brings outstanding skills, knowledge and outgoing personalities to the program. SYRCL is very proud to have them lead the volunteers this summer to speak to thousands of visitors from all over the world about how to be good stewards of the Yuba River. Come out and meet the River Captains on June 22nd at the Highway 49 Bridge from 10am – 5 pm to celebrate the River Ambassador program kickoff!
Artist and filmmaker, Terra Nyssa, has spent years on the river. "It feeds my soul," says Nyssa. "So it is natural for me to be on the river as an advocate for everyone's health and safety." Nyssa's passion for salmon is evident in her paintings now showing at Mowen Solinsky Gallery in Nevada City.
"I am a Nevada County native with a great love for the Yuba." Terra Gleeson is an experienced conservationist and educator. She has spent time educating kids about science and working with raptors in Idaho for Boise State University. "I am looking forward to spending time this summer back at the Yuba, speaking with the community about the river we all love so much."
Alanna McDermott is also a Nevada County native who recently graduated from UC Berkley with a degree in Forestry. Alanna is looking forward to sharing her knowledge of our forests and their connection to the River with all the visitors to the Yuba.
Environmental educator Ali Stefancich is new to the community. "I grew up in the lush beauty of the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, but I dreamed of bigger mountains, trees the size of trains, raging rivers, and vast wild lands. So, I headed west to attend Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, to study ecology." Now Ali lives in Northern California, "I have happily called Nevada City home for the past year and half where I have served as an AmeriCorps member at Sierra Streams Institute. I am so excited to be working with SYRCL and to give back to the river that has brought me so much joy."
