ROCKLIN, January 5, 2009 - The Sierra College Natural History Museum will present an illustrated lecture entitled "Climate Change and Earth's Endangered Bears" by Bear Expert Harry Reynolds on Friday, January 30, 2009, at 7:30 PM in Sewell Hall on the Sierra College-Rocklin Campus.

The world's northern bear species are all endangered - affected by human influences and climate change. Alaskan Harry Reynolds has conducted extensive research on many North American large mammals (including polar bears, grizzly, and black bears) as well as studies throughout Asia and South America. Currently he is Team Leader for the Great Gobi Project - focused on the critically endangered Gobi bear. Reynolds' illustrated lecture will discuss worldwide bear endangerment with a focus on his recent work in Mongolia's Gobi Desert (a place Reynolds states "makes Nevada look like a Garden of Eden") and the vanishing Gobi bear, a species of brown bear.

Harry Reynolds is a former wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and is a world renowned expert on bears. Harry's father was a ranger in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and young Harry was involved with bear research from an early age. At the age of fifteen, Harry started working with the Craighead Family, pioneering bear researchers in West Yellowstone. It was the Craigheads who first developed and employed radio telemetry to study bears. His experiences with the Craighead family began what is nearly five decades of bear study by Reynolds.

Now 60 years old, Reynolds is one of the most respected brown bear biologists in the world. Recently he was elected to his second term as president of the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA), an organization that includes professional bear biologists from around the world dedicated to the conservation of all bear species.

Reynolds' presentation is part of the Sierra College Natural History Museum's 2008-2009 lecture series, and will be held on Friday, January 30 at 7:30 pm in Sewell Hall, room 111 on the Rocklin Campus. Tickets are available at the door. Prices are General $5 / Students and Seniors $2 / Museum members free. All proceeds benefit the Sierra College Natural History Museum.

The Sierra College Rocklin Campus is located at 5000 Rocklin Road in Rocklin. There is a $1 parking fee on campus. Parking permits are available at dispensers located in the parking lots.
