Rocklin February 28, 2012 - In honor of International Women's Day on March 8, 2012, the Sierra College Nevada County Campus is pleased to host Ms. Gillian Martin Sorensen, a former United Nations Assistant Secretary General. Ms. Sorensen's presentation entitled "Women and Men Changing the World Together" will address women's health, education, and empowerment through United Nations programs around the world.
Ms. Sorensen's presentation will be held from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Center, N12-103, on the Nevada County Campus, located at 250 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley CA. This is a FREE event and the community is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Such events are being held throughout the world to inspire and celebrate women and their achievements. The importance of leadership in all governments and cultures supporting women and men as equals is a primary goal of UN programs. Wars, forced migrations, and poverty strike women and children the hardest. Ms. Sorensen will speak of such crises, but she also will provide many examples of successes in education and peacekeeping. She will talk about the new UN role of asserting the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) peoples in nations where genocide threatens, such as in the recent case in Libya.
The UN with the help of the United States and the international nonprofit organizations make a positive difference in the world. Through her life's work Ms. Sorensen can point to many examples of creativity and leadership present when women and men work together. Time will be available for students and staff to ask Ms. Sorensen questions.
