Sierra Nevada Group's Friday night presentation: A Family's Excellent Adventure - Hiking the John Muir Trail

By: Sierra Nevada Group of the Sierra Club

The Sierra Nevada Group's Friday night's meeting begins at 6:30 pm for the potluck with the Limov family's excellent adventure at 7:30 pm. It should be a wholesome presentation to interest everyone in the family. Friday, May 16, 2008, Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City.

Last July the Limov family, Joe, Miriam, Hannah (age 16) and Abby (age 12), set off from Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park to hike the John Muir Trail - all 211 miles of it - the adventure of a lifetime! Donning full packs, they began their hike which ending at Mt. Whitney 27 days later. Four days into their trip, they were met by 5 horses, a mule named Peaches and many friends in Tuolumne Meadows and other trailheads who joined them for parts of the journey.

A very special part about this adventure was having a friend bring along his pack animals to carry the heaviest loads, so that they had the ease of exploring the wilderness with only day packs. Due to the drought conditions, they had the most ideal hiking situation: low water/river levels, no mosquitoes of any kind, yet were met glorious meadows of flowers and tremendous fishing - enough to enjoy fish tacos quite often.

The Limov family will share with you the permit process, gear, meal planning, logistics, itinerary planning, first aid and emergency plans, so that you too can get out into the wilderness and enjoy the simple life too - one pot meals, sleeping under stars, watching clouds float by on a 12,000 foot pass, swimming in freezing lakes, fishing by wild rivers or calm lakes, or watching sunrises and sunsets with your family or friends!

Please join us for a potluck supper starting at 6:30 with this delightful program at 7:30. Bring a dish to share and your own utensils to ease in the clean-up.
