Sierra Solutions Conference draws leaders from the Sierra Nevada, Mammoth Lakes, CA, Oct. 3-4, 2008

By: Sierra Business Council

August 29, 2008 - The Sierra Business Council and Sierra Nevada Conservancy are leading a conference that works to build healthy communities, prosperous economies, and environmental quality. Sierra Solutions takes place at the Mammoth Conference Center in Mammoth Lakes, CA, October 3-4, 2008. It features sessions such as Energy Efficiency, Green Building and Affordable Housing, Relocalizing Economies, and The Emerging Carbon Market.

Electric power production and transportation are the two largest sources of carbon emissions in the United States with California producing 47.24 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. It qualifies as one of the biggest emitters in the United States. Training sessions at Sierra Solutions on institutional heating with biomass, carbon sequestration, energy efficiency, re-localizing economies and others offer applicable mitigation approaches in dealing with carbon emissions.

Sierra Business Council's Betony Jones said, "We're examining how to maintain the Sierra Nevada as a carbon sink rather than a carbon source in order to draw more [carbon] out of the atmosphere than we are emitting. The Sierra Nevada will be a model and we must begin examining alternative forest management methods if we want to mitigate and plan for climate change in the state of California."

Sierra Solutions features open plenary speaker, Lucy Blake, the Apollo Alliance's former CEO and founding President of Sierra Business Council. The Apollo Alliance is a coalition of business, labor, environmental, and community leaders working to catalyze a clean energy movement in America to reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil, cut the carbon emissions that are destabilizing the climate, and expand opportunities for American businesses and workers. Joining Lucy Blake as a closing keynote is PK Agarwal, Director of the Department of Technology Services for the state of California, who brings more than 20 years of experience as a Chief Information Officer in both the public and private sectors.

"This conference explores a direct link between mitigating the impacts of climate change, exploring energy efficiency and smart land use, and producing jobs that foster the green economy," said Steve Frisch, President of Sierra Business Council, "Sierra Business Council has always stood by the fact that our incredible natural resources foster how we do business, and how we do business fosters environmental quality."

Join Sierra Business Council and partner Sierra Nevada Conservancy in the Eastern Sierra for 2008 Sierra Solutions. Conference registration can be made on the Sierra Business Council website at www.sbcouncil.org.
