GRASS VALLEY, Calif. November 20, 2012 - TEDxGrassValley returns to Nevada County, Sunday, December 2, at The Center for the Arts, from 4-9pm. This is the fourth TEDxGrassValley with nearly 400 women and men having attended in the last three years. The independently produced event, operated under license from TED, is organized around the upcoming TEDxWomen conference, taking place on November 30 and December 1 in Washington DC. TEDxGrassValley is one of the 10,000+ global communities, in 50+ languages on 6 continents joining the conversation about how women and girls are shaping the future. TEDxGrassValley is organized by representatives from the Nevada City Film Festival, Center for the Arts, Miners Foundry, NCTV, Insight Lectures, The Friendship Club, Nevada County Big Brothers and Sisters, and See Jane Do.

In an unprecedented partnership, TED and The Paley Center for Media will produce the third annual TEDxWomen: a gathering of global thought leaders and innovators in Washington, DC, connecting to thousands of online participants and self-organized events around the world. The cross-disciplinary, cross-generational program will focus on and explore the theme of "The Space Between".

TEDxGrassvalley will webcast thought-provoking talks from TEDxWomen including:

• Julia Bluhm and Izzie Labbe: two young women who successfully petitioned Seventeen magazine to stop altering face and body shapes of girls with photoshop.

• Anita Sarkeesian: a feminist media critic who initiated a successful Kickstarter campaign to examine gender tropes in video games. Shortly after, a Flash game, where users could punch a likeness of Sarkeesian, went viral, underscoring the sexism she sought to unveil.

• Bob Woodruff: a former ABC war correspondent who suffered a traumatic brain injury while embedded in Iraq, and his wife, Lee, who will describe their journey of starts and stops.

• Eve Ensler: a well-known feminist playwright, performer, writer, activist, and author of the The Vagina Monologues.

• Chung Hyun Kyung: a Korean spiritual leader and ecofeminist.

• Musimbi Kanyoro: head of the Women's Global Fund.

• Jessica Pabon: on the history of graffiti artists.

TEDxGrassValley will also feature a handful of the region's leading thinkers, innovators, artists, and leaders, including:

• Karen Atkins: Certified Wudang Qi Gong Instructor, Advanced Certified BodyTalk Instructor, Award-Winning Songwriter, on Re-think Super Woman: Make changing your world a sustainable reality

• Mayumi Elegado: Publisher of the Award-Winning bilingual newspaper Moonshine Ink based in Truckee, CA, on New Journalism: The Power of Storytelling

• Tiffany Gray: Friendship Club Girl and Student, on I am the Space Between

• Julie Greene: Executive Director of Solar Cookers International, on Harnessing the sun to improve health and environments

• Lucinda K. Porter, RN: author of "Free from Hepatitis C: Your Complete Guide to Healing Hepatitis C", on Hepatitis C: The Baby Boomer Virus

• Katie Sabira Rubin: Actress and Comedian, on Spirituality for the Spiritually Rebellious, Femininity for the Femininely Challenged

• Amanda Thibodeau: Founder of the Food Love Project, Farmer, on How the love of food can change the world

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world- changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe
to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
