SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. July 8, 2009 - Those new to running and walking or participants that enjoy shorter distances can now register for the Lake Tahoe Marathon's 5K, 10K or the event's popular, non-competitive 20-Miler Run, Power Walk and Jog. Marathon walkers can also take part in a special race for them over the 26.2-mile course.

The Lake Tahoe 5K is scheduled for Sunday, September 27 at 8:30 a.m. The course starts and finishes at Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe, California and heads past the historic mansions of the Valhalla Estates. Baby strollers are welcome. The course is off streets, and is part dirt trail.

The Lake Tahoe 10K is Sunday, September 27, 9 a.m., and is the last 6.2 miles of the Lake Tahoe Marathon course. The run starts at the top of Emerald Bay at Inspiration Point on the West Shore and is 99 percent downhill. The last three miles are on a paved bike trail through changing aspen trees and over Taylor Creek with its fire cracker-red, spawning Kokanee Salmon. The start line can even be viewed in the movie City of Angels (1998), when actress Meg Ryan bikes down the narrow spine of the ridge overlooking Emerald Bay, Cascade Lake and Lake Tahoe (the last 15 minutes of the film).

The Lake Tahoe 20-Miler Run, Power Walk and Jog is slated for Sunday, September 27, with an 8 a.m. start in Homewood on the West Shore, approximately six miles south of Tahoe City, California. This event, perfect for serious power walkers and those runners training for a marathon, has a seven-hour time limit.

The Lake Tahoe Marathon Walk is also scheduled for Sunday, September 27 and follows the marathon course from Commons Beach in Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe, but starts at 6:35 a.m. (before the Marathon race begins).

Runners and walkers have a host of events to choose from during the Lake Tahoe Marathon Race Week (September 23-27), including the Marathon, coined "a Sunday morning run you'll never forget," that winds down the West Shore from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe's Pope Beach for a post-run bash; Tahoe Triple (three marathons in three consecutive days); Ultra 72-Mile Around-the-Lake Marathon; 3-Day Triathlon; Marathon Relays; Half Marathon; 20, 35 or 72-Mile Bike Races; Kayaking events; free Kids Fun Run and Speed Golf.

For more information or to register (fees vary for events), call 530-544-7095 or visit the Lake Tahoe Marathon website at www.laketahoemarathon.com. The website is also home to a course map and profile and event descriptions.
