Nevada City Oct. 6, 2008 - Fire restrictions in the Tahoe National Forest (TNF) will be lifted at midnight tonight, Monday, October, 6, 2008, announced Tom Quinn, Forest Supervisor. Last weekend's rain enabled Forest Service officials to lift restrictions which will now allow visitors to have campfires in the backcountry. As fall progresses however, visitors are reminded to be fire safe as the weather can turn warm, dry and windy. "Please remember that conditions can become fire-prone again and visitors need to be careful with fire and fully put out their campfire," advised Quinn.
This past year in the Tahoe National Forest, there were 25 lightning caused fires that burned 24,796 acres including the American River Complex (20,541 acres) and the Yuba River Complex (4,254 acres) which began in June. There were also 53 human caused fires for 38 acres plus an additional 54 abandoned illegal campfires.
Woodcutting remains open until November 2 or until wet weather requires the closing of roads.
