The Nevada City Farmers Market Gearing Up for Grand Opening

By: Nevada City Farmers Market

The new Nevada City Farmers Market, sponsored by the Nevada City Downtown Association, is preparing for its grand opening Saturday, June 28th and will continue for 18 consecutive weeks through October 25th from 8am to noon. Local fresh produce, breads, locally raised meats, honey, nursery stock, flowers and eggs will be available.

The market, located in downtown Nevada City on Union Street in front of the new Union Street buildings, will not only host farmers, but will open a channel for non-profits to offer educational demonstrations, public outreach and conduct fund drives. Market Manager, Reinette Senum, encourages any and all organizations to contact her if interested in reserving free "community space" throughout the 18 weeks.

Participating farms thus far, but not limited to, include; Mountain Bounty Farm, Bluebird Farm, Heaven and Earth Farm, Indian Springs Organic Farm, Wild Grace Farm, Naked Farms, Garden Fare, and Sunlight Botanicals.

Opening day will include an opening ceremony with local dignitaries at 10 am at the corner of Broad St. and Union St.. "Ragged But Right" will be playing in the newly constructed Robinson Plaza.

Educational demonstrations, an important element of the market, will take place under the shade trees of Calanan Park. The Nevada City Fire Department as well as the Nevada County Fire Safe Council will be on hand to educate residents on fire dangers and safety measures for a particularly precarious fire season.

U.S. Department of Agriculture lists 4,385 farmers markets currently operating in the United States, representing a 7 percent increase from 4,093 farmers markets in 2005. The Nevada City Farmers Market will be another addition to that statistic.

The Nevada City Farmers Market came about in response to local farmers asking for a farmers market in addition to the Friday market, the York Street Farmers' Market, which will continue on Fridays. Impetus for the new farmers' market was also spurred by the Great Nevada City Survey where 89% of respondents said they want more downtown events involving closed streets and are especially supportive of a farmers' market.

The Nevada City Farmers Market is taking applications for additional produce and complimentary food vendors, such as bakery items, baby food, dried vegetables, spices, nuts, pastas, teas, and pestos, etc. If you are a local or regional farmer or non-profit interested in participating in this festive community affair, contact the Market Manage, Reinette Senum at 470-8381 or email reinette@powerup-nc.org. It's all about local, fresh and fun!
