Truckee Climate Action Network Receives Grant from the Northern California Environmental Grassroots Fund

By: Truckee Climate Action Network

The Truckee Climate Action Network is among fourteen organizations in Northern California to be awarded a grant from the Northern California Environmental Grassroots Fund, a pooled funding collaboration of the Rose Foundation, which is located in San Francisco.

According to the Rose Foundation web site, the Grassroots Fund recognizes organizations "from the farthest fringes of the state... taking on a wide breadth of environmental issues including toxic pollution, environmental health and justice, sustainable agriculture, habitat preservation, land management and urban sprawl... Constituencies served and mobilized are similarly broad, ranging from core activists to people who have traditionally not engaged on environmental issues, but are energized around a key local concern".

Other grantees in the Spring 2007 funding cycle included the Clover Valley Foundation, North Coast Action, the Malcolm X Neighborhood Arts Collective, Friends of the Petaluma River and the Campesinas Undias de Tulare County.

Beth Ingalls, who applied for the grant on behalf of the group, is delighted to be included among the Grantee organizations and is grateful for the award of $2,750, which will be used for general support purposes.

"This grant is a real boost to our new organization and will help us pay for some basic operating expenses such as our web site, non-profit start up costs and even a little staff time. Another item on the list is logo design. I am currently looking for a graphic designer who is interested in creating the TCAN logo, and who is also willing to do the work at a reduced rate."

TCAN also recently received a grant from the Passthrough Fund of the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation for $10,000. Those funds were explicitly earmarked for a compact fluorescent light bulb change-out program, which the group is completing now.

Kris Hansen, a professor for Sierra College's Tahoe/Truckee campus who has an internship with TCAN this summer is serving as the Summer Light Switch program coordinator. Hansen helped develop and carry out the initiative.

"In the short span of a little more than a month, TCAN has distributed 2100 CFLs of varying styles to over 600 Truckee homes free of charge. We have also completed a free change out for substantial portions of the Glenshire Clubhouse, and the Claire Tappan Lodge. Our future plans include an exciting partnership with the PUD on a free low income light bulb change out program. Our ultimate goal is to create an incandescent free Truckee."
