Oct. 10, 2008 - This week the Sheriff's Office has made available to citizens of Nevada County, the VINE/SAVIN program. This Statewide service offers added protection for crime victims and the public via an automated service providing custody and release information relative to inmates housed in county jails. Sheriff Royal says this program is an automated service citizens can access 24-hours-a-day, either by phone or the Internet. Individuals will have the right to be automatically notified if a particular offender is released or transferred.
VINE stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday and SAVIN Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification. Earlier this year, the California State Sheriff's Association obtained a grant from the Department of Justice to offer this software system to every Sheriff's Office in the State of California, free of charge, until January 2010.
VINE/SAVIN is definitely designed with the victim in mind. It's very user-friendly and what makes it special is the automatic notification feature – as long as you've got a telephone or a computer, you can receive an automated alert anytime of the day or night. Access to the system may be obtained through www.vinelink.com or by calling 1-877-411-5588. The Sheriff's Office will also maintain a link on their webpage at www.mynevadacounty.com/sheriff.
The public is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Administrative Office at 530-265-1471, during regular business hours, to have basic questions answered regarding the use of the VINE program.
