Updated: Wind, Rain, Frost and Snow through Saturday - Snow Level 2,500 Ft.

November 8, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Showers continue to move into Northern California today and will continue to linger through Saturday morning. Well-below normal temperatures will bring snow levels down to around 2500 ft, with local areas down to 2000 ft. Up to 2" of snow possible for the Sierra foothills, and 4-10" of snow possible for the mid-slopes of the Sierra.

First frost potentially this weekend: Make sure to prepare your plants, pets, and house for frost. As always, use caution while traveling.

November 8, 2012 - A low pressure system off the Pacific Northwest coast will be dropping southward into northern California this afternoon and evening bringing showers and mountain snow to the north state.

The system will generate enough instability for a threat of thunderstorms in the valley.

This is a relatively dry system so precipitation amounts are not expected to be heavy. The low will move east of the state by late Saturday bringing warming and clearing skies on Sunday.

Light snow for Sierra Foothills & Mountains today and Friday. A cold storm moving into NorCal today and Friday will bring light snow to the mountains and upper foothills of the sierra. Snow levels during the day today will range between 3500 and 4500 feet.

Snow levels continue to lower tonight into Friday morning down to around 2500 feet with some local areas getting snow or a rain/snow mix down towards 2000 feet by early Friday. There is not a lot of moisture associated with this storm.

However, this will be the first snow of the season for the Foothills where they could get up to 3 inches of accumulation. Most of the snow will accumulate near and above 5000 feet.

Estimated totals are around 6 inches at 5000 feet and up to 10 inches near the crest. Gusty mountain winds will accompany the storm and since snow will be light, periods of reduced visibilities are expected near pass levels during the storm.

Winter weather advisory remains in effect from 4 pm this afternoon to 10 am Friday above 2500 feet.

* Snow accumulations: Up to 3 inches.
* Elevation: Above 2500 feet.
* Timing: Snow levels will lower tonight through Friday morning.
* Locations include: Grass Valley, Magalia.
* Winds: South 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.
* Impacts: This will be the first snow of the season for some communities. Residents should be prepared for light snow accumulations on roads.
