By: Yuba Watershed Institute

NEVADA CITY, Calif. Nov. 19, 2008 - The Yuba Watershed Institute is pleased to invite the community to the 11th Annual Fungus Foray, Saturday, December 13, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center with an introductory slideshow on Friday evening, December 12, 2008 at 7:30 PM with featured presenter, Christopher Hobbs, author of Medicinal Mushrooms.

Join us as we foray into the Yuba Watershed's fungus hotspots to collect, identify and discuss the area's incredible diversity of mushrooms varying from edible to medicinal and taking on many shapes and spectacular colors.

This rain or shine mushroom celebration begins at 7:30 PM, Friday, December 12 at the schoolhouse with presentations from Christopher Hobbs, author of Medicinal Mushrooms and Daniel Nicholson, local fungus expert. The following morning, Saturday, December 13 we will gather at 10:00 AM to assemble foraging groups that will collect mushrooms within a 25 mile circumference of the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center.

In the afternoon, we will reassemble to identify and discuss more than 100 varieties of mushrooms with the assistance of UC Berkeley mycologist, Else Vellinga. The afternoon program will also include science-based presentations and fungus-inspired activities for the entire family. Mushroom related merchandise and event t-shirts will be available for sale.

Please bring a lunch and be prepared to walk in the woods. Also useful: collection basket, waxed paper bags, knife and hand lens.

The Yuba Watershed Institute is a Nevada City based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of the Yuba River Watershed. It produces and sponsors educational programs and cooperates with public and private agencies to establish examples of good land stewardship and management. Its pioneering project is the ‘Inimim Forest, nearly 2,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land centered on the San Juan Ridge north of Nevada City. This community-based forest plan is an on-going work in progress designed to implement the ideal of sustaining old forest habitat and producing high quality timber products.
