Closure of the South Yuba River State Park and the Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park: A joint memorandum from the elected officials of Nevada County, Nevada City, Grass Valley and Truckee

By: YubaNet

February 6, 2012 Editor's Note: In a very rare show of unity, all the members of the Nevada County BOS, the Nevada City and Grass Valley City Councils and Truckee Town Council signed the letter below to Gov. Brown. The joint memo was a project of Nevada City councilmember Robert Bergman.

Copies of the letter will be sent to:
John Laird - Secretary for Natural Resources
Ruth Coleman - Director, California State Parks
Senator Doug LaMalfa - 4th Senate District
Senator Ted Gaines - 1 st Senate District
Assemblyman Dan Logue - 3rd Assembly District

The text of the letter is below:

We are writing to you jointly now to underscore how important it is that the South Yuba River State Park and Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park remain open. All of the State's parks in our region are critical to our economy and to our quality of life, but we have critical concerns about these two parks because they have been included on the State's 'closure' list. This is something that cannot be over-emphasized. These parks are essential components of our county's well being on all levels - economically, educationally, recreationally, ecologically, historically, emotionally. Abandoning these invaluable assets and leaving them effectively unprotected - as the State is currently planning to do - is, in a word, unconscionable.

Our intent is to speak as individuals, and also to convey the equally committed voices of our constituents. Our unanimity here should be seen as a clear and strong indication of our unqualified support for the community's work to keep these parks open for the public's use and for the overall health of our area.

In light of the competing and overwhelming demands on all of our local budgets, it is incumbent on each of us to examine these funding challenges and to find new, alternative ways to help meet them. To that end, we will be working collaboratively and expansively with all interested parties on workable solutions that will prevent these parks from closing.

With that, we urge you to remove South Yuba River State Park and Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park from the State's closure list.

Ed Scofield, Hank Weston, Nate Beason, Terry Lamphier, Ted Owens, David McKay, Duane Strawser, Reinette Senum, Sally Harris, Robert Bergman, Jan Arbuckle, Dan Miller, Lisa Swarthout, Yolanda Cookson, Jason Fouyer, Joan deRyk Jones, Barbara Green, Carolyn Wallace Dee, Mark Brown, Richard Anderson
