All three water tenders have been released, three engines to remain on scene until 7:30 and the three Washington Ridge crews will return to camp around 9:00 pm.

The cause of the Yuba Fire is suspicious in nature and human-caused.

Over 70 firefighters are still on scene of the fire. Mop-up operations are slow-going because of the terrain and the hazardous conditions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but an abandoned campfire is the likely cause.

The transport dozer from Butte will remain at the staging area on Lake City Road and North Bloomfield for now and can be released if there is a new incident.

A family of hikers on the trail made contact with the firefighters and wanted to let their family know they are OK and walking out now. The message is being relayed by the Grass Valley ECC now.

Yuba Air Tac has identified a spot burning outside the retardant lines, rolling material has ignited more fuels. Helicopter 514 will reconfigure for bucket work and douse the hot spot.

Forward progress of the fire has been stopped. Direct line construction is at about 40%, crew 514 will be committed for approximately one more hour. Construction of a contingency line above the fire with dozer is beginning. One additional water tanker is requested to the staging area. Overall commitment for firefighters will be 4-5 hours with air resources committed for another 1-2 hours.

The air resources, specifically the helicopters, are starting to run out of targets for their water drops. They will be available nearby if needed. Handline construction is making good progress.

Tanker 89 is now released, Tanker 88 will be on fuel and hold, returning to Grass Valley.

A screenshot from the flight tracker shows the flight path of Yuba Air Tac and the two tankers currently over the fire. Tanker 89 is returning to Grass Valley on a load and hold. Air Tac reports the retardant box is now looking very good. [Load and hold: A tanker is fully loaded with retardant and is on standby at the air base.]

Left flank is downriver side, right flank is upriver side of the fire for the air resources. Fire orientations are given according to the north/south alignment.

More rolling materials are increasing fire activity on both flanks of the fire. The retardant lines are being reinforced, but once the material rolls downcanyon more duff and scrubs are igniting. Helicopter 699 is lifting from Truckee now, ETA 25 minutes.

Yuba Air Tac is directing Tanker 88 to reinforce the left flank of the fire. The fire is heating up and becoming more active. Tanker 89 has become available and is now assigned to the fire.

Fire is still at 2 to 3 acres. Air support is doing a good job at mitigating any additional growth. Hand crews and air resources will work this fire, some of the engines might be released in about an hour – with no direct access to the fire their efficiency is greatly reduced. Rollout is becoming more of a concern at this time.

Tanker 88 is on load and return from the Grass Valley Air Base, the bucket work by helicopters continues. Temperatures are climbing, but winds are very calm – moderating the fire activity at this time. Progress is being made.

Yuba Air Tac is requesting the Type 1 Helicopter stationed in Truckee for the fire. Firefighters are scouting above the fore for possible dirt tracks to get equipment closer to the fire.

Yuba Air Tac reports the fire is pretty active, but the retardant lines around the fire are holding. Tankers will reinforce the lines and TNF 514’s Helitack crew is now hiking in to build handline.

Air show is underway, helicopters are starting bucket drops. Tanker 88 is inbound again for a drop on the left flank of the fire. With the sun starting to hit, fire activity is slightly increasing. Some rollout reported. [Rolling materials are a safety hazard, often times burning logs roll down a slope and ignite other fuels on their way down.]

Firefighters in the canyon have to contend with the very steep terrain, poison oak, snakes and the sun heating up the fire.

Aircraft on scene: Air Tac, two tankers and two helicopters (CAL FIRE and Tahoe National Forest). Engines, water tenders, dozers and crews from North San Juan Fire, CAL FIRE, Nevada County local agencies are on the fire.

One tanker has dropped across the head of the fire and firefighters are starting to construct line above the fire. IC is cautiously optimistic the fire will not devolve into a major incident. The fire is burning in heavy fuels but at a slow rate of spread. Helicopter 2HP is now staffed at the Auburn Airport and en route to the fire.

Full wildland dispatch, all units en route to stage at North Bloomfield and Lake City roads on the North San Juan side. Tankers and Air Attack will be over the incident in a few minutes. Incident Comander (IC) is on the south side of the river on Enterprise Mine Road.

Helicopter H24 has located a small fire on the north side of the river, estimated 1-2 acres burning at a slow rate of spread in very steep and inaccessible terrain. Two helicopters are inbound.

Firefighters near the South Yuba Campground are seeing a column of smoke coming out from the trees approximately half a mile upstream. They are hiking in to determine the exact size and location.

Smoke check in the Yuba Canyon, in the North San Juan and Nevada City. Numerous engines are looking for possible fires, but drift smoke is heavy. CHP Helicopter is en route from Auburn to assist.
