August 17, 2016 at 5:13 PM Truckee Fire Protection District message: We have experienced numerous downstrikes from the passing thunder showers in our area. All resources are out checking reports of smokes in the area.  CALFIRE, US Forest Service and Truckee Fire have resources checking all reports.  Currently there is a tree on fire in the Granite area near China wall which is confined to one tree with no threat to the wildland at this time.There is also a helicopter being used for any remote areas to help with any fires from the lightning strikes.  Please keep your eyes open for any smoke coming up from the trees and report it to 911. With your help we can help keep our community safe.

August 17, 2016 at 1:57 PM NWS alert: A strong cell near Squaw Valley will drift southeast towards Tahoe City and Lake Tahoe. This cell has the potential to produce strong outflow gusts up to 50 mph and cloud to surface lightning strikes. These strong and sudden shifts in wind direction may catch boaters off guard and could capsize vessels. Those out on the lake should seek safe harbor immediately. Locations impacted include: Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Sunnyside, Highway 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City, Lake Tahoe.

August 16, 2016 at 5:03 PM At 5:00 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Carnelian Bay, or near Tahoe City. This storm was nearly stationary. Winds in excess of 30 mph will be possible with this storm especially over the waters of Lake Tahoe in the vicinity of Carnelian Bay.

Locations impacted include, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Northstar, Carnelian Bay, Northstar Ski Area, Tahoe State Rec Area Campground, Dollar Point, Silver Creek Campground, Sunnyside-Tahoe City.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions

If on or near Carnelian Bay on Lake Tahoe, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
