August 17, 2016 at 5:13 PM Truckee Fire Protection District message: We have experienced numerous downstrikes from the passing thunder showers in our area. All resources are out checking reports of smokes in the area. CALFIRE, US Forest Service and Truckee Fire have resources checking all reports. Currently there is a tree on fire in the Granite area near China wall which is confined to one tree with no threat to the wildland at this time.There is also a helicopter being used for any remote areas to help with any fires from the lightning strikes. August 17, 2016 at 1:57 PM NWS alert: A strong cell near Squaw Valley will drift southeast towards Tahoe City and Lake Tahoe. This cell has the potential to produce strong outflow gusts up to 50 mph and cloud to surface lightning strikes. These strong and sudden shifts in wind direction may catch boaters off guard and could capsize vessels. Those out on the lake should seek safe harbor immediately. Locations impacted include, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Northstar, Carnelian Bay, Northstar Ski Area, Tahoe State Rec Area Campground, Dollar Point, Silver Creek Campground, Sunnyside-Tahoe City.
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions
If on or near Carnelian Bay on Lake Tahoe, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

August 1, 2016 at 12:00 PM Good progress on the fire on Beacon Hill. Tankers are overhead, helicopters working any remaining hot spots at the head of the fire. Retardant lines are complete, full containment will be achieved shortly. Forward progress of the fire has been slowed.
