NORTH SAN JUAN, Calif. July 10, 2017 – North San Juan Fire Protection District, an all-volunteer fire department, reported a theft and vandalism to a car. According to PIO Freya Johnson, “Unfortunately, North San Juan Fire Department has been hit with yet another theft this year. On Sunday at Bullards Bar, one of our battalion chiefs found his truck’s back and side windows broken and his NSJ gear stolen. This gear included his wildland pants and helmet, his structure turnout jacket, his web gear and fire shelter. These items are all obviously crucial for any firefighter to do his or her job and are very expensive to replace. A sheriff’s report has been filed. We want this gear back, no questions asked! We’re asking our community to please keep your eyes out for this stolen gear. Hopefully it will find its way back to our station.”

Over the weekend, NSJ firefighters responded to a river rescue, a major injury accident a a bevvy of medical calls.

North San Juan Fire is the oldest volunteer fire department in Nevada County, serving the area since 1862. The District covers some 70 square miles of the San Juan Ridge, including the historic communities of French Corral, North Columbia and North San Juan. It includes all territory between the South and Middle Yuba Rivers, from Bridgeport in the West to roughly the east entrance to Malakoff Diggins state Park in the East.

  1. Thanks Pascale for your continued support. Your readers might like to know that the total value of the gear taken is close to $5,000 most of it useless to a private citizen. I can’t really see someone walking down the road wearing a turn-out coat emblazoned with “NSJ FIRE” on the back.

  2. Higgins Diggins Lions Club is proud to make a donation of $500 to help with the cost of replacing the equipment! We want to challenge all other service organizations in Nevada County to step up and make a donation also! We appreciate our brave first-responders who serve our communities and keep us safe!
